Important note! Apply the "less is more" rule when using hair styling products. Start with small amounts. It is much easier to add more if you need it…and next to impossible to remove excess without washing your hair all over again.
Hairspray: Probably the most common product in the male hair care tool box…and probably the most over used, too. Hair spray is quick and easy to use, so men tend to grab this one first. Unfortunately, hair spray leaves your hair sticky and crunchy. Not a look or a feel that you want for your hair. Hair spray is better for long hair styles more common with women. So unless you have that type of style, I suggest skipping the hair spray in favor of one of the following types of products.
Gels: Hair gels come in a variety of formulas ranging from light to heavy…with the heavy ones tending to be sticky and goopy. A lighter formula will give your hair a more natural look. Too much gel can give your hair a wet look. Apply gels while your hair is still damp after towel drying. Work the gel in thoroughly and then style.
Creams: Hair creams should be applied to hair that is dry or almost dry. Rub it into your hand for a few seconds first to warm it up a bit. Creams are best for curly or stubborn hair…not so good for fine textured hair. Because creams don't dry hard, they give your hair a more natural look by allowing for movement.
Pomade: Like creams, pomades do not dry hard. They add weight, shape, and texture to your hair, but with less hold then a cream. Good if you want more shine without the wet look of a gel. Not so good for oily hair.
Wax: Use wax for the serious hold. Good for providing detail and can add dimension to your style…especially if you have short hair.
Important note! Don't forget about the top and back of your head - often overlooked because you can't see it in the mirror. Make sure you don't neglect to include this section of your hair in your hair style routine or you will end up with an uneven look. You may not notice, but others will.
